I keep reading, ” this will allow property tax relief”. I don’t get it. You are going to raise my income tax so I can get property tax relief? What am I missing?
What is wrong with funding education through property taxes? More importantly what is wrong with funding education at the local level? Why is it better to fund at the state level?
Well listen up campers, it is all a matter of control. Remember property taxes are local taxes, whereas income tax is state tax. Big difference.
With state level funding which has to be done through income taxes, we send, excuse me, our money is taken before we get it and given to the state. The state divides it up as it sees fit and gives it back to us with strings attached. This is of course AFTER they take a cut for managing our money for us. If we don’t meet their terms for getting OUR money back they will threaten to not give us our money back. Control Level #1.
Currently we can excerise some degree of control on how money is spent and how much money is spent on education with local control. Tax payers can and do organize and push for more spending, or less spending and they vote on it. Sometimes they vote many many times. But this is really basic grassroots democracy at work. If we are income taxed we don’t get to exercise this level of control over OUR money. Our state representatives who will consult with all the state deparments will decide, who gets how much for what, and what will they have to do to get it. No more grassroots organizing. Control Level #2.
I keep reading over and over again how cities and towns are frustrated over their ability to raise revenues. Well who do you think is frustrating them, actually we are, the voters, exercising basic control at the local level. At the state level, one Governor in a happy mood with one speech and with willing houses can raise BILLIONS in an afternoon. Try that at the local level and you can barely raise a MILLION or two and it’ll take you months and GASP, voting to do it. Not nearly as much fun.
Look at all the attention the Rell is getting, everyone thought the Democrat Houses were going to run the show. She stole their thunder, she is the center of attention now. The Democrats hardly know what to do with themselves. Poor things.
Listen up guys, if you think that the Avons, Greenwichs, Glastonburys of Connecticut are going to get their income taxes back in school funding, think again. It is going to the cities. This is income re-distribution. All taxes are income re-distribution. If the goal was not to re-distribute, the money could have been left with us.
Taxes are the ultimate in control.
What’s wrong with the property tax? We have too much control over it.
