What Passes For Job Creation In Connecticut

9 March 2007

The job growth/creation in Connecticut for January was just released today by the state’s economist.

Connecticut created 700 new state employees with lifetime benefits, this is in ONE month and a grand total of 200 manufacturing jobs to pay for those state employees. At this rate we will add 8,400 new state employees this year and 2400 manufacturing. Those manufacturing guys must need A LOT of supervision.

To be fair another 3,000 jobs were created in the “hospitality” industry. Must be maids for the casinos.

Was that a net 700 gain on the state employees, and what sector were they hired in. I’d be curious if you are noting a seasonal fluctuation or an overall trend.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not give a breakdown, by sector in the government. I am not sure how to get those numbers.
The “not seasonally adjusted” number was 300 lowered.
The 700 number was the “seasonally adjusted” number.
The numbers do vary on the order of ~200 a month and as with any large organization that does make sense.
For the graphs I looked at the January figures for each year.
The graphs show a definite trend to higher employment in the government sector for Connecticut. All those tax dollars have to go somewhere.
