TAX DAY AT THE CAPITOL

21 March 2007

Sorry for the font color, I don’t have time to edit the file, evidently the FCTO uses a canned web design program with hundreds of font markups which would have to be edited one at a time as found.  This press release needed to get out now.

Connecticut property owners pay one of the highest property taxes in the nation, second only to New Jersey. Annual increased property taxes, driven by unfunded mandates and revaluation, put Connecticut property owners at risk of losing their most prized possession—their homes. For this reason, legislators need to enact immediate and effective.

Property Tax Reform!

On Thursday, March 22, 2007, The Federation of Connecticut Taxpayer Organizations, Inc. will host a forum to discuss Proposition 2 ½ which is currently in effect in Massachusetts.

Leading the discussion will be Connecticut State Representative Arthur O’Neill, Southbury, who has proposed legislation which would allow each municipality in Connecticut to incorporate Proposition 2 ½ in their Town Charters to control local spending and local property taxes.

Tomorrow we will forward a more extensive agenda. The contact person is Theresa McGrath

570-1203 or 810-8592.

CCM RELEASES UNFUNDED MANDATES REPORT

The following was recently released by Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM). Please also refer to the attached.

From CCM: The attached Unfunded Mandates Report (dated March 12, 2007) is a select list of pending bills that propose new state mandates on towns and cities. Some of these bills would have a significant fiscal impact on municipalities and their residential and business property taxpayers.

Before taking any action on these proposals, please carefully consider the impact passage of these proposals would have on local property taxpayers across Connecticut.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Gian-Carl Casa or Ron Thomas of CCM at (203) 498-3000.

Thank you.
