Corn does not belong in my gas tank

28 June 2007

A study in modern politics would be well served to study the concept of corn in our gas tanks. This is raw naked political power being exercised in the open with little regard to appearances.

“There is just no energy benefit to using plant biomass for liquid fuel,” says David Pimentel, professor of ecology and agriculture at Cornell. “These strategies are not sustainable.”

There is no engineering or economic sense to making gas with corn. But there are plenty reasons not to. First of all it is food.

Second the ONLY argument corn gas cheerleaders can make is a weak, “it reduces our need for foreign oil”, not really. Since making corn gas is a net loss of energy, making corn gas requires increased importation of foreign oil or diversion of other energies that could have been used to offset foreign oil.

Professors may argue whether making a gallon of corn gas (ethanol) takes 129% of the power latent in a gallon of corn gas or merely 85%. Doesn’t matter even at 85% it is a bad economic bet. If it was a good bet then billions in subsidies (government) would not be needed.

Additionally all the government money subsidizing corn to gas is discouraging private investment in more refining capacity here in the U.S inflating our need to import refined gas.

To me nothing illustrates the breakdown of government better than this wanton disregard of engineering / economic / foreign policy than this 3 billion subsidy of corn gas.

This is nothing more than a shakedown of the American taxpayers by policitians and the farm lobby who have learned the best customer is the American taxpayer.
