Unrest grows in Iran over gasoline.

29 June 2007

“We are importing gasoline from 16 different countries,” he said. “The country would be on the verge of collapse if they suddenly decide not to sell us gasoline. The government has to find a way to lower the consumption.” Full article here.

Incompetence does not know national boundary, Iran imports over 40% of their domestic supply of gasoline. Evidently their refineries are old and inefficient and Iran has spent too much time and energy pursuing Nuclear dreams and the international political power that goes with it. Meanwhile they have ignored the domestic needs and unrest grows. They are now rationing gas in this oil producing country. Gas stations have been torched by mobs.

“We are importing gasoline from 16 different countries,” he said. “The country would be on the verge of collapse if they suddenly decide not to sell us gasoline. The government has to find a way to lower the consumption.”

Don’t you just love it!

Why is this happening?

Government control economy with centralized planning by the Government. This model has not worked anywhere. Didn’t work in the Soviet Union and it vassel states, has not worked in Germany/France/Great Britain and does not work here. Even China gave it up. Coupled with an sense of entitlement on the populations part. Presto, unrest, riots and burning gas stations.

We can only hope this causes the fall of the Iranian government. They did it before not to long ago and having done it once is still in the memories of the current living population.

Here’s a thought, can we bundle Jimmy Carter on a midnight plane and embed him deep in Iranian territory and ask him to advise the Iranian Government?

Here’s another thought, 3 billion in taxpayer funds for corn gas here in the United States for a concept any rational person can see is deeply flawed.

And a warning, we import a high percentage of our gas, we have not built new refineries in decades, we are exposed to risk and interruption of supply. We probably depend on gas in our economy more than the Iranians do. How thick is our veneer of civilization?
