Tort: The Connecticut Business Environment or Follow The Money Part Duo

31 July 2007

Connecticut ranks 44th (50th is bad, 1st is good) in the tort environment for business among these United States.

Wikipedia defines tort as Tort is a legal term in common law jurisdictions that means a civil wrong, and can be a criminal wrong, that is recognized by law as grounds for a lawsuit.”

What is a “wrong” can be wide ranging indeed. Again Wikipedia, “To behave ‘tortiously’ is to harm another’s body, property, or legal rights,….

The 44th ranking was given by the Pacific Research Institute.

Which compared

Any business re-locating looks at the legal environment as part of the total cost of doing business.

Why do we care?

“A poor civil-justice system lowers the standard of living for ordinary citizens,” said co-author Hovannes Abramyan, a PRI public policy fellow. “By limiting job and business opportunities, imposing excessive costs on consumers, and inhibiting innovation in products and services, the many are suffering for the few who gain from unnecessary civil lawsuits,” he said.

The mere threat of a lawsuit is costly, lawyers must be consulted, employees spend days and days gathering information related to the lawsuit. The cost in lost employee productivity can be staggering. This is why people/companies settle out of court. Better the devil (settlement) you know than risk a trial and a jackpot jury award.

This is just one more example how our state has been mis-managed.

Oh by the way, please review a previous post on the large campaign contributors to Connecticut’s political races.
