Ethanol may increase cancer in the U.S.

28 August 2007

Professor Mark Z Jacobson PhD professor, department of civil and environmental engineering, Sanford University, California and leader of a study comparing the effects of ethanol versus gasoline on health published in Environmental Science and Technology, Cars running on gas with high percent of ethanol emit 20 times more acetaldehyde a major contributor to ozone production. Ozone increases the risk of respiratory disease such as bronchitis and asthma.

…it was found that E85 (85%
ethanol fuel, 15% gasoline) may increase ozone-related mortality, hospitalization, and
asthma by about 9% in Los Angeles and 4% in the U.S. as a whole relative to 100%
gasoline. …..

While on vacation in Vermont this past week I noticed my “plastic” iced tea cup was made from Corn, to preserve our precious resources. I can not begin to imagine what the cost of that cup was. The cost in energy to make the corn “oil” then the cost to convert it to “plastic”. Our society would have been better served with a good old fashioned recycled paper cup. Sheer lunacy.
