Greenpeace is building an ark on Mount Ararat

28 August 2007

The 10m x 4m x 4m (32ft x 13ft x 13ft) wooden ship, being constructed by Greenpeace volunteers, will send a strong message to leaders of all nations that we must act now to tackle global warming and the impending climate change crisis.

Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

Over the next 2 weeks, a team of 20 German and Turkish carpenters will complete the construction of the boat, which will be turned over to the public in an official ceremony on May 31, 2007. A day before the ceremony, activists will climb the 5,137 meter summit of Mount Ararat and call on the leaders of all nations to make climate protection a reality.

Damn, we missed it!

I am also missing the message here. Generally speaking I am pretty good at this symbolism thing, like I even read Joseph Campbell, (the book on tape is better).

But I did totally miss the point in the “The Lord of the Rings” when the Elves sailed to the west. So this “strong message” must be like that. There is a boat involved.

Are they going to make them take it down after the all the activists climb up the mountain? Or are they going to make the “public” they “turned it over” to clean up after them?

I have admired Greenpeace in the past for their savvy use of the media. They know how to make their point and get their message out there. But this one is soooooooooo subtle it just flew by me.

I’m sorry guys but all this is going to do is really freak out all those fundamentalists who are pouring over Mount Ararat on google earth.
