Rights We Should Have

13 December 2007

1) Right Of Referendum

The citizens shall have the right by petition to create and change existing laws.

2) Spending Cap

Spending shall not be increased such that total spending is greater than 3% of the citizens wealth. This includes all expenditures of state government including all those off budget items.

3) Read The Bill

All bills shall be posted in their entirely on the Internet for at least one week prior to voting. Any changes made to the bill after the one week period has started shall require a new one week period to be started. This will prevent those 2 AM budget buster bills where all sorts of stuff gets thrown in. This essentially takes away the excuse, “I got it 5 minutes before the vote, I didn’t know …… was in it”. This forces our government to work responsibly and get it’s work done in an effective manner. There could be a clause allowing for emergency bills given a natural disaster or war if the Governor declares it.

4) Right Of Public Comment On Potential Laws

In conjunction with the posting of bills at least one week prior to voting. The public shall be allowed to publicly comment on the Internet, on the same website and linked to the posted bill.

5 ) Right Of Recall

The citizens shall have the right by petition to call for a new election of any elected official. Hear that Iowian Senator Dodd?

6) GAAP

The state shall conduct accounting by Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAPP).

This is a repost, I felt it needed reposting.

Even though it may be a repost, the items listed, if made into law, would go a long way towards getting the attention of legislators. Imagine, voting on a complex proposal without understanding it. Hard to believe.

    Amen…
    Nice job!
