On the Dan Lovallo Radio Show, Senate President Williams remarked that the Senators and Representatives do not get ethics training.
Perhaps this would be a good thing.
As a member of private industry in a large corporation, I get ethics training every year whether I need it or not.
I have to pass a test, where I answer questions about various situations. Corporate is very good about making sure we all take and pass the test.
We are taught that we must not only avoid the illegal acts but must also avoid the appearance of un-ethical behavior.
Why is it that I in private industry get hours of training but those in elected positions who are entrusted to spend billions of taxpayer money get none?
Also I get audited every 18 months for financial and business processes. I get audited every 2 years for environmental issues, I am not a generator of hazardous waste and my waste streams are small. If I had serious waste streams the audit frequency would be yearly.
And I get audited twice a year on our Quality Management System by an outside auditor. Not to mention we do approximately 24 internal audits to assure we are following our internal procedures.
My point is, private industry has enacted many controls to assure we are running our businesses in an ethical and legal manner, which includes outside independent third party auditing. Most of which is to assure we meet the laws passed by our elected officials.
As taxpayers perhaps we should insist on same?
A few good Aerospace Quality Assurance Engineers just might do a world of good in the world of public service.
