It seems almost the sum total of the Republican Primary race has been devoted to
answering the question, who is most like Reagan or who is the one true heir of the Reagan legacy.
My friends this is a recipe for electoral disaster. Last I checked, Reagan was dead and left office over 23 years ago. We’ve had Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush since then.
They even had a debate at the Reagan Library.
The American people have never been as a group particularly backward looking, indeed how many of the voting population was not even born when Reagan left office? Certainly not 99% of the Obama crowd.
The Democrats are particularly good at “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow!” and of “Hope and Change” which is inherently a “tomorrow” message.
I remember the Reagan years and Reagan looked forward, it was all about tomorrow and reaching the promise of America, letting Americans be Americans.
It’s morning again in America. Today more men and women will go to Work than ever before in our country’s history. With interest rates at about half the record highs of 1980, nearly 2,000 families today will buy new homes, more than at any time in the past four years. This afternoon 6,500 young men and women will be married, and with inflation at less than half of what it was just four years ago, they can look forward with confidence to the future. It’s morning again in America, and under the leadership of President Reagan, our country is prouder and stronger and better. Why would we ever want to return to where we were less than four short years ago?
I am proud that I voted for Reagan and would do it again. I could be called a Reagan conservative, but in 2008 I’d rather be called a RonPaulian.
And that is my point, for crying out loud it’s 2008! The Soviet Union is gone, Castro is almost dead, it’s a new time and it’s a time for new directions within the conservative dogma.
Running backwards 25 years and you will lose. Especially if the Republicans are running a 72 year old white guy against a young vibrant 47 year old guy who can deliver a speech.
I’ll end this with an excerpt from Romney exit speech.
The threat to our culture comes from within. The 1960’s welfare programs created a culture of poverty. Some think we won that battle when we reformed welfare, but the liberals haven’t given up. At every turn, they try to substitute government largesse for individual responsibility. They fight to strip work requirements from welfare, to put more people on Medicaid, and to remove more and more people from having to pay any income tax whatsoever. Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity. Dependency is a culture-killing drug—we have got to fight it like the poison it is!
