Well that should do it. We’ve been treated to a press conference, we’ve been shown they care and concerned, why they even put on their best glum faces.
Actually the press conference was held prior to this announcement, remember the “repeal the business entity tax press conference”? The elected employees lead by Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz knew this report was coming, so they got out in front of it and proposed dropping a $250 tax! Oh, be still my beating heart.
They care, they are concerned, perhaps the engine that drives all the social spending and slush accounts may be endangered. Perhaps, but we’ll hold a press conference look concerned then do nothing.
And nothing is exactly what this session of State Government has done. Now I tend to believe that Government doing nothing or less is a good thing, but after decades of doing it to us, they need to do something, like passing laws to do less.
No such luck, you have wonder if they even know how. Maybe posturing and press conferencing is all they know? And tax raising of course.
In a rare period of clarity Susan Bysiewicz said,
“Businesses are struggling with the high cost of utilities and gasoline, housing and real estate and, of course, health insurance,”
And of course “health insurance”, of course.
No mention of course, “taxes”. How could she overlook that? In this state of the highest taxes in the country?.
Nah, taxes could not have anything to do with businesses failing!
Why is the Secretary of State leading the charge on this? Where are Speakers?, Majority Leaders? Silence! Odd the Bysiewicz is out front on this? Another Dem with Governor visions?
A record number of Connecticut businesses closed in the first three months of this year, evidence that the nation’s economic troubles are bearing down on the state.
At least 2,752 businesses folded, the highest number of business stops for the first quarter since at least 2000, according to a report that Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz released Wednesday.
In March alone, 1,107 businesses informed state officials that they had ceased operations.
When businesses close there is economic hardship, investments lost, capital equipment dumped at close out prices, loans not repaid. Nothing good in this statistic. Oh, if you’ve ever tried to get a business loan and you are small business, they want your home as equity for the loan. Lots of pain out there.
Dreams lost.
The Bysiewic led the charge prior to this infamous statistic, “she sees the problem”, she will now propose further actions after the announcement to show “she knows the solution”. Being not from the legislature branches she’ll be able to claim, “I wasn’t in charge, I couldn’t do anything”.
It is clear, our state government is not functioning as well as it could. We lead the nation in way too many infamous statistics. Not a total failure, as long as we are safe in our homes the masses won’t revolt……uh oh.
Nothing done, absolutely nothing done an entire session and nothing done.
Can we petition to become part of New York or Mass? Heck THEY HAVE LOWER TAXES!

And in addition to all of this, this morning’s Courant says the state was planning to impose a 6% tax on delivery services. (FEDEX, UPS, etc.) But the good news was that the tax would only apply to the cost of the delivery service as measured from the point it crossed the state line until delivered to the customer. Wonder how that was going to be measured?
