Bianca Andreescu has issued an apology after her actions at the US Open.

Andreescu, who is the reigning Wimbledon champion, had hit 10 unforced errors and lost to top seed Serena Williams.

The 27-year-old Romanian said: ‘I think we have the tennis match we need to have.

‘I would like to apologize to Serena for my errors, my mistakes, my bad attitude. I want to apologize to everyone who’s been supporting me.

Andreescu added: ‘I am sorry for hurting you. The only thing I wanted to do was win the championship but I didn’t, but I am ready to play with that energy that I’m going to need to have for my next tournaments.

‘I want to apologize to everyone who’s been supporting me, and I really want to apologize to Serena. I’ve never been in that position before. Today was not my day and I wish that it had been.’

As the match progressed, Andreescu found it hard to shake off her frustration from the long grass of Centre Court.

She said of her error: ‘I didn’t know about the grass, and I hit in the wrong place. I hit a ball in the grass and it hit my hand. I hit a ball a few times in the grass and it’s a long grass, but then it ends up in a place that I didn’t want it.

‘I want to apologize to everyone who’s been supporting me. I really want to apologize to Serena. I’ve never been in that position before. Today was not my day and I wish that it had been ‘
